The final 20 minutes or and then of "The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future," the slow-called-for parable from the author-manager Francisca Alegría, are well-nigh entirely wordless. In its last act, the movie follows the members of a fractured family equally they wander nearly, bandage in different directions and undone by contempo oddities on their dairy farm. The power of Alegría's feature debut is found not in dialogue or explication, just in the lyrical, magical realist qualities of folklore: disappointed mothers and fathers, sacred animals and cursed rivers, dearest and forgiveness.
At the moving picture's commencement, a woman (Mía Maestro) bubbles up from the surface of the water, landing on a riverbank filled with dead fish. In a shop, an erstwhile man (Alfredo Castro) collapses at the sight of her. Miraculously alive and not having anile a day, she appears to be Magdalena, the man'southward wife who mysteriously drowned herself decades earlier, leaving him and his two children backside. Soon later, the man's daughter, Cecilia (Leonor Varela) returns to the family subcontract to care for her shaken male parent. Cecilia has her hangups most her mother'due south death and her ain teenage child's transgender identity.
As Magdalena wanders back to the subcontract, the family begins to reckon with a complicated by, and the cows, which she had e'er loved just that suffer from the realities of manufactory farming, begin interim strangely. Through these animals, the moving picture becomes an allegorical prayer — an elegy for man failures toward i another and the living globe, and an incantation for a return and reversal of sorts.
While often elliptical, Alegría'southward directing is patient, a skillful quality for a movie that could have fallen prey to sanctimony. In this moving-picture show, the purest truth tin can exist seen in the optics of its cows — the mournful gaze of the mothers, and the tragically innocent expect of the calves that have been torn from them.
